Iron forms compounds mainly in degrees of oxidation 2 and 3. They are widely used in industry of ferrous (II) sulphate (FeSO4 · 7H2O) and iron (III) chloride (FeCl3). Compounds of iron (II) tend to just to compounds of iron (III) upon exposure to air. Iron trichloride is a soft crystalline mass or flakes in a yellow-brown color.
 
Ferric trichloride is used for industrial purposes, such as printed circuit boards, as a coagulant for cleaning of sewage and industrial waste, chemical reagent, striping for metals, such as laboratory chemical, organic chemical catalyst.
 
Ferrous trichloride is used in the production of biogas production of pigments, adhesives and sealants, in poligraphic and radioelectric industry, in the food industry.
