Potassium chloride

CAS No: 7447-40-7
EINECS No: 231-211-8
Formula: KCl

Potassium chloride is the salt of potassium and chlorine. In normal conditions, is a white crystalline powder or colourless crystals odorless. Salt to taste, they are dissolved in water, while in alcohol are practically insoluble. Occurs in nature in the form of different minerals:

– silvin (KCl)

– silvinit (NaCl·KCl)

– karnalit (KCl·MgCl2·6H2O)

– kainit (KCl·MgSO4·3H2O)

Mined directly as mixed or silvin minerals, most commonly used by the different solubility of salts in water. It is used as a fertilizer rich in potassium. Because it contains chlorine, potassium chloride is not recommended in some crops such as potatoes, etc., which are sensitive to chlorides. Imported during the summer-autumn plowing for spring crops and before sowing for the autumn-winter crops. Serve as raw material for obtaining the potassium, potassium hydroxide, potassium chlorate, etc.

Solutions of potassium chloride in water are used in laboratory practice for storage of the electrodes, the electrolyte as the electrodes (3 M KCl). It is used as a source of beta radiation for the calibration of instruments. Potassium chloride is used in the metal processing industry, glass industry, energy industry, food industry, such as mineral fertilizer. It is widely used in medicine.
