Silicon carbide is the hardest and the sharpest of the minerals used to produce sandpaper. It’s insoluble in water, but soluble in molten alkalis (NaOH, KOH) and molten iron. It is most commonly found in the form of water sandpaper, also used in non-woven abrasives. Silicon carbide can be green or black. Green silicon carbide is mainly used for grinding and polishing hard alloys and ceramics, and black silicon carbide is used for grinding of cast iron, alloy and alumina. Carborundum can also be used as abrasive powder for sandblasting.
